The word Shebeen
traveled all the way to Mozambique’s neighboring
South Africa with the Irish immigrants of the 1950s. The
townships adopted this odd-sounding term for the makeshift
bars springing up in many parts of the country. Beer crates
provided bar stools as locals came together to debate
politics and sports and to enjoy terrific music. It is
fabled that you referred to the head of the house as the
“Shebeen Queen.”
Today, a Shebeen
simply means your favorite watering hole – a great
place to meet friends. So, whether you’re at Mama’s
Jazz Joint in Johannesburg, or Sis Du’s in Durban,
or Mozambique in Laguna Beach, tell your Shebeen
Queen you’re ready
for one of her house specialties, and enjoy!
